Toph "parenting style" is what she thought she wanted as a child, freedom, but too much freedom becomes abandonment. She was doing what she thought was the best but it wasn't I don't think it was out of malice

Maybe it’s because I am an eldest daughter, but after finding out what Suyin did and how she acted, and then adding to that what she said to Lin. I couldn’t STAND HER!! Because what do you mean that she could do illegal shit, scar Lin’s face, and then just get shipped off to their grandparents so this way Toph could preserve her reputation. It really makes it feel like Toph spat on all of Lin’s efforts. And on top of that, Suyin got a really good life, she doesn’t really pay for what she did. She still gets her freedom and family, it legitimately feels like Lin got the short end of the stick.

I actually can't really understand why people are being so dramatic over this. I mean, Toph was a neglectful parent, and when the conflict started Su was a teen, a pretentious teen just like all the puberty mfs are. Lin was the one holding grudge, while Su did try to reach out. Looking at what Su accomplished you can clearly see that she did change as a person. And actually, though Su's words were harsh, yes, that's on her, but she did try to talk like normal people. That didn't come out of nowhere, we say stupid things when we become really fed up. People romanticise Lin's character too much — in reality you would constantly get exhausted from talking to her
