One’s past can strictly define his present status. Khushal Khan Khattak once served in the Mughal army but he later fought valiantly against them, which is why we revere him as our beacon today. The same in the case of Sher Ali Afridi. However assassinating a single British official does not make someone a freedom fighter their entire life and broader struggle must be demonstrably anti-colonial. Otherwise the killing can be viewed merely as a personal grievance. Claiming at the end that an act was committed for the Pashtun cause or as part of an anti-colonial struggle may simply be an attempt to justify oneself to the public. This is similar to how politicians like Imran Khan or Nawaz Sharif claim after their ousting that their imprisonment was for the sake public which does not prove they are true leaders of the masses.
