Emily was jealous that Lorelai was able to create a life for herself with a man. She had no identity outside of being a wife and homemaker. We see her struggle with this in the later seasons. Her entire life centered around helping Richard, because that’s what she was raised to do. She’s envious that Lorelai created her own life because she never could’ve done that.

I see both sides. Emily was a mother, not an enabler- she loved Lorelei and wanted what she thought was best for her- but I also understand Lorelei is a free spirit and didn’t like the control.

emily loved her daughter tremendously. yet she was as also tremendously flawed, cruel, abusive and manipulative. those things can co-exist. if lorelai had stayed home i don’t think their relationship would’ve survived. both her and lorelai had to endure the time apart for their relationship to be salvaged and it eventually did. lorelai learned to live in the real world and emily learned the consequences of her abuse.

you can’t sit here and say that lorelei is in the wrong but her mother didn’t even remeber her own daughter broke her entire leg, she doesn’t care to randomly reach out unless it’s related to herself or rory they constantly beat down on her (not her dad) and belittle her for leaving and wanting her own life and her own money. as someone who’s been in this exact situation i wouldn’t wish it on my worse enemy there are times where i wish i could run up to my mother and hug her and cry for hours but she doesn’t respect or cherish me the same way they set aside lorelei and belittle her.
