Military recruiters in Ukraine launched raids at restaurants, shopping centres and a concert over the weekend, detaining men and intimidating them into joining the army. Men were brought over to recruitment desks, and had their exemption documents checked. Men who had faulty documents or refused to show them were dragged away. Under Ukraine’s martial laws, men between 18 and 60 are banned from leaving the country and men between 26 and 60 are eligible for the army. Due to a severe shortage of soldiers, recruitment efforts are being amped up, with the mobilisation age being reduced to 25 from 27 and the “only partially eligible” loophole being axed. Ukraine is also mobilising its prison population to fight and is tightening punishment for men who fail to serve after conscription. Why is enthusiasm to enlist waning?
