Resume and school mean very little whenever I hired designers. Portfolio matters most. And truthfully, it could be a personal site, Behance page, IG account, PDF, just show the work.

When I went to school for graphic design we called it “visual communication” which sounds a little different, so you could try that. But anyway, the onslaught of AI and Canva shouldn’t frighten you… because it means there will be a carpet across society of bad design, which will make your good designs look better in contrast.

Just make your art look like you have experience and then when they ask if you have experience say “just look at my art” problem solved bestie see you tomorrow 🫶

These feelings are very common! "Experience" is made up though. It can be whatever you want it to be, it doesn't have to be "I worked at ______ for 3 years" and "I worked at ______ for 2 after that." Do you like a band? Reach out to them and ask to make a shirt design or a poster for an upcoming show or an album cover. Boom. Experience. Do you love an author? Ask if you can work with them on an upcoming project. Boom. Experience. Just start building your portfolio, and if/when those experiences go well, the people you've worked with will tell their friends to work with you. Before you know it, you'll either have enough things in your portfolio to prove your worth to any company you're applying to, or you'll have enough of a client base (and enough... get this ... EXPERIENCE) to just hit the ground running, working as a freelance. I believe in you!
