As PhD biomedical scientist, I can tell you this is not at all uncommon, and it can be (and often is) soooo much worse than this... The boundaries are too blurred and the power imbalance is taken advantage of in academia, leaving many of us with very deep scars.

My husband had a research advisor as an undergraduate who was in charge of the foreign student visas, and he would put the most vulnerable students in his lab and then threaten their visas if they tried to leave the lab so he would keep his PhD students working on his own research for years and not let them publish enough under their own name in order to graduate. It was awful.

I love these so much, they not only remind others that they're not alone but they do help people stand up for themselves and find their voices so these behaviors don't continue especially with younger people entering the corporate world.

Respectfully I feel like people milk these “panic attacks” too much. I had one when I was 11 and I took two minutes and kept it pushing. It definitely didn’t take me out for the whole day this is ridiculous

Unfortunately, I witnessed abusive advisors regularly when I was in academia. The bigger they are, the less likely they face any real consequence because they bring in funds to the universities.
