@tashatakesaleft: The declining birth rate isn’t actually that complicated… I came across this clip of Vivian Tu on the Great Company Podcast, and she touched on something I think we really need to acknowledge. People aren’t necessarily having fewer children because they’ve stopped wanting them. They’re having fewer children because having children has become unaffordable. Rent and mortgages are through the roof. Childcare can cost more than a second salary. Food, energy, transport and pretty much everything else keeps getting more expensive - while so many people are already struggling to make ends meet. And yet, we still talk about declining birth rates as though it’s primarily a cultural problem. Maybe it’s an economic one. You can’t keep making family life increasingly expensive and financially difficult, then act surprised when fewer people feel able to choose it. And if governments genuinely want more people to have children, perhaps the conversation shouldn’t be about convincing people to become parents. It should be about creating a society where parenthood is actually affordable.
