So....when your Pirate's Booty TikTok came out, talking about the packaging change, I was watching it, and then reading the comments (while it looped), and my level 3 nonspeaking son went into his sister's backpack and took out a bag of Pirate's Booty, old packaging, and brought it to me. I thought maybe he heard you saying the name a bunch and then got it (he only sometimes eats it). I opened it for him and handed it back, and he pushed my hand with the bag away, towards my phone, like he wanted me to send it to you. I couldn't believe it. 🤯 They know exactly what's up.

as a teacher who has special needs children in her classroom, they 100% understand what's going on around them. their problem is not the understanding. usually it's the ability to make the right reactive choices and controlling impulsive choices and then some of them can be for lack of a better verbology kind of locked inside their brain and unable to verbalize what they need to and they need photos or visuals. I have a little 4-year-old who is hyperlexic. she's reading on like a fourth grade level so when she starts to get overwhelmed or overstimulated I can just hand her one of my social stories and she can read it and understand it. so I truly believe that they know what's happening. they're just their body. just doesn't pay attention or understand or to communicate properly with their brain for their correct socially normed responses. I hope I worded all of that properly. it's tricky

My grandson is minimally/ moderately verbal. I know he understands everything that’s going on around him.

My special-needs child who’s nonverbal has a very rare brain malformation definitely knows what’s going on because my husband’s work schedule changed and my son knows it normally my husband will come home at 8 PM but now it’s 11 and my son is so confused why Dad’s not here to say good night to him

I think they often understand, but have trouble communicating. I always assume people who have difficulty communicating can understand. In the end, we really have no way to know what somebody can and can’t understand and so I always act on the assumption that somebody might understand everything. That seems a lot better than acting as if they don’t understand.

Of course he can. As his mom you know how much he can understand. I have a grandson with autism, who is 21. He always surprises us with how much he knows!
