@kinacptsdtherapist: If you’re interested in exploring your own attachment experiences, or you’re a therapist supporting clients in doing deep attachment work, my workbook, The Felt Sense Attachment Workbook, is a resource developed to support this process. It includes a series of experiential exercises and prompts designed to support the discovery of our attachment patterns, deepen awareness of our inner attachment world, and explore how our past experiences continue to influence us in the present. You can find it on my website kinawolfensteintraining.com

so I've known for decades I was royally fucked up as a child and I've been medicated and in therapy for many many years but your explanation of specific qualities or quirks I have makes me feel glad that someone can articulate what I'm feeling and why because Ive always had a hard time with it.

It really sucks being messed up by a chaotic family and then being blamed by those family members for being messed up….

It legitimately never occurred to me that parents would help or explain emotions to a child. So…

Yep. I didn’t feel protected or prepared then and I don’t feel like it now that I’m an adult. That’s why I’m terrified of the world and of people and that’s why I NEED plan a, b, c, … overthinking, overgiving, overworking to make sure I’m okay.

as a kid and even into my mid-twenties, I never went to either parent when something bad happened to me because I instinctively knew they would not only make it worse but that I would be in trouble.

Is it even possible to fully heal this? Cause after years of healing and CPTSD, it just sadly feels like it isn’t :(

I experienced emotional neglect as a child and as a 35 year-old adult, I am actively working through anxiety and hypervigilance through EMDR therapy, self soothing and daily reminders that I am safe.

the only safe place was my room. as an adult, anytime I have to make big decisions and have to deal with change, I shut down so quickly.

I had to put my authentic experiences behind an electrified fence and translate everything to meet my parents in the external world in the emotions, relationships, communication framework that my parents understood. YEARS of being told that how I would inherently explain things is Wrong, ended up where I lost all access to ME. I was made to meet expectations before I was ever allowed to learn my own limits.

Then there’s no fixing this because it’s the *illusion* of safety that trains you to expect risks to turn out fine. After you grow up you intellectually understand risk, but you’ve emotionally internalized the illusion. If you miss that window, trying to convince yourself that someone is always there to save you is not going to work

I spent so much time being worried about so many things… I would spend days almost sick to my stomach because I couldn’t ask for help. I would finally ask my grandma for help but it took literally my body almost falling apart.

My dad was never the safe person. My mom was the one to comfort me from my dad’s abuse. But then she would rip out that comfort from under me after I was “calmed down”. Now it affects me in so many ways. That I never know when someone will rip their love away and so I am afraid of trusting too much.

I have never been willing to take "risk". Everything I've always done has always been incredibly calculated. yup.

Can this work the opposite way? I had the exact experience you are describing, but became that safe place for my kids. Sometimes I feel like they are not fearful enough…too willing to take risks.
