@unmhealth: You know paramedics work in ambulances. But did you know they also work throughout the ER? 🚑 At UNM Hospital, paramedics help direct patient flow, start IVs, draw blood and stabilize patients, including in trauma care. It’s a role many people never see. #Paramedic #paramedicsoftiktok #emergencyroom #Hospital #Albuquerque
That’s bad ass. I wish more states and hospital systems would embrace this model

It’s crazy to me that people talk about nurses being on a “higher level” than paramedics… in Australia they are the same, just different jobs.

I’m a paramedic based in the hospital who also responds to 911 calls. My scope allows me to function the same as an RN. So I have assigned patients and carry out orders just the same.

So a paramedic working as a tech/MA—a low paid entry level role? Explain why “we” are okay with being devalued in this way?

I’m not saying that paramedics aren’t capable but I think if we’re going to allow this, there needs to be a larger focus on training paramedics for the in-hospital role. Similarly to how I wouldn’t throw a nurse on an ACLS ambulance with an EMT and expect them to do the job (critical care transport is different), it’s not appropriate for paramedics to all of a sudden be given the green light to fulfill the nursing role. Both are uniquely qualified for their unique respective roles. Not saying they can’t become qualified for each others roles, but some extra training and qualification needs to take place

Paramedics are allowed to work in ER in Texas, but it’s a dead end job. No room for advancement, etc.

Have medics in the ER is game changing. At the end of the day having more highly trained hands is essential for patient care. Enough nurse vs medic bullshit. We are on the same team.
