— “Guys, where are you? I have an announcement!” Even without seeing her, I could tell Mom was excited. She was practically squealing. “There you are!” Jayna and I exchanged a look before walking into the living room. Mom was beaming. Which was never a good sign. “Oh, I want you to meet your new sister.” “Oh.” That was both of our reactions. Not because we were against it. Just because it wasn't exactly the kind of announcement you expected over breakfast. Then I saw her. And something in my chest tightened in a way I didn’t like. “Meet Natsha,” Mom continued happily. “She’s the daughter of a friend. My friend passed away recently, and she doesn’t have any close family left, so she’ll be staying with us.” “No.” The word slipped out before I could stop it. Mom’s eyes immediately narrowed. “Don’t mind Lalee. She’s probably throwing a tantrum.” Natsha stood quietly beside her. Calm. Composed. Looking like she already belonged here. Which was exactly the problem. “Come on, Natsha,” Mom said warmly. “Make yourself at home.” Then she dropped the next bomb. “And she’ll be occupying Lalee’s room.” “Mom, no.” For multiple reasons. “You already have your own penthouse and barely stay here anymore. End of discussion.” I opened my mouth. I closed it. I opened it again. “Be nice to Natsha.” “What if I don’t want to?” “I know you will.” Mom pointed at me like that settled it. “And if it really bothers you, you can share a room with Jayna.” “No.” “Then share with Natsha.” The spare room was gone—Jayna had turned it into an art studio months ago. Which meant I was stuck. With her. And I didn’t know why that made me so angry. — A week later, I made sure everyone knew exactly how I felt about the situation. Mostly by showing up at the house every day. Even though I didn’t have to. “You’ve been here almost every day,” Mom said over breakfast. “Not busy with work anymore?” “What? You don’t want me here?” “No, of course not.” “Good. I’m sleeping here tonight.” Mom frowned immediately. “I’ll share a room with Natsha. That’s fine, right?” “You can sleep in my room,” Jayna offered. “Shut up.” “Rude.” “My stuff is in that room.” “I don’t mind,” Natsha said calmly, continuing her breakfast. Of course she didn’t. Nothing ever seemed to bother her. Least of all me. And somehow that annoyed me more than anything else. — That night, I walked into my old room. Natsha was sitting on the bed reading. Or pretending to. She'd been on the same page for ten minutes. Not that I was paying attention. She looked up when I entered.

Or pretending to. She'd been on the same page for ten minutes. Not that I was paying attention. She looked up when I entered. "You're really staying here?" “Unfortunately.” A faint smile tugged at her lips. “I missed you too.” I froze. Then immediately glared. “Don’t.” “Don’t what?” “Talk like that.” For a second, neither of us spoke. Natsha looked back down at her book. But she didn't turn the page. Didn't read. Just stared. Something twisted unpleasantly in my chest. She closed the book carefully and set it aside. “You’ve been showing up every day.” “This is my house.” “You have a penthouse.” Damn it. She had a point. Natsha stood and walked closer. Too close. Close enough that my breathing changed before I could stop it. “You still hate me?” she asked quietly. “Yes.” “Liar.” The worst part? She sounded completely sure. Like she knew something I didn’t. Continuation in the comment👇🏼 #lenamiu #shortstory
