Privates for sure over classes, and time and her commitment to the skills. If she has thr strength and natural skill for tumbling she will excel quickly I’m sure, but tumbling can be scary so starting later in life can be more difficult cause they tend to think more about what they are doing than say a 5 year old. Mine started at 3 so by 6 she was a level 4 skill and by 9 she’s was a level 6. But if ur girl wants it she can achieve it with hard work and faith in herself!

You got this❤️I also have zero experience in cheer. I started her off at 3 doing gymnastics. She is now almost 6 and doing cheer classes and gymnastics. Should I drop gymnastics and add tumbling?

Our gym offered tumbling classes and we do that and some privates (which I put off until my oldest wasn’t throwing her BHS without being scared for a year and a half then she got it perfected in 6 months doing privates!

You are doing it. Privates are the best and if you want to save money since she is still in the beginning phases we found a high schooler in the neighborhood to help with her walkovers before she got more advanced that’s saved a little bit!

If you want her to cheer in MS and HS you need to drop the competitive cheer! They are two different styles. Tumbling in a competitive mat that has springs won’t help her tumble off a field or court.

my daughter started at the same age, we're 4yrs in. we got her a tumble mat and trampoline. she watched lots of YouTube videos on stretching to help as well. we haven't done many privates, but my daughter is dedicated and focused on getting better. Her team even won summit last year. She'll get up to speed quickly as long as she works hard. best of luck!

I didn’t start tumbling until I was in 9th grade. I ended my cheer career working for NCA. She will be fine! Just give her all the opportunities she asks for and let her enjoy it. If she isn’t enjoying it, there is no point.

A year of all star will make a world of difference! What are the middle school tumbling requirements?

Definitely privates! Practicing what she learned at home while also doing strength conditioning. That not only helps get the skills but builds muscle memory and muscle to help prevent injury. And lastly, your support! Celebrating her victories and being encouraging throughout her struggles. Look at every “failed attempt” as a learning opportunity to get better. Your moto in Allstar is awesome! I cheer so hard for those kids on that stage! Best feeling ever!

wow my daughter was 11 when she started and still made the middle school team and is now in high school and still doesnt have a ton of tumbling and is still made high school cheer. Our high school is division 1 and has gone to states so I am shocked just because she doesnt have any tumbling experience she didnt make middle school cheer where the foundations can be laid. I hate we have become a society that if a child isn't doing something by age 4 they are screwed. Your doing just fine Mama. A lot of girls do choose to stay in all star and skip school all together too.

Private lessons and tumble classes. But even then, not every kid tumbles. I’m surprised she didn’t make the MS unless your school is very competitive and always winning. Often, if you are a strong stunter and a good performer, it can make up for lack of tumbling

And cheer at my daughters school won’t let them tumble, which is why my 11 yr old didn’t try out. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

Year 4 All Star cheer mom! From Mini level 1 and now level 3 Junior team. Tumbling will come! She’s just gotta work at it form privates, classes and whatever she can do at home. Trust the process!! Always remember some kids have tumbling more then other skills and visa versa.

School cheer and all star are two different animals. My daughter never made the school team but was on a well-known worlds team. For tumbling, private lessons help because they get more attention. Also encourage her to go to open gyms so she can practice what she learns. Expect regressions/inconsistency when she first gets a new skill or goes through a growth spurt. It’s part of the process.

You’re doing great mama. Put her in a tumbling class at the gym your in and put her in some private lessons. That should get her where she needs to be ❤️

Is she doing AllStar now? If so she may not want to go back to school cheer. They are so different. My daughter did both and stopped school cheer because she realized she loved All Star more. If she is an awesome base or backspot she does not have to have tumbling. It helps but not a deal killer. However I will recommend signing her up for tumbling classes at either her cheer gym or a gymnastics/tumbling gym.

My daughter started gymnastics at 5. She started competing at 7. It's what she liked to do... at his point get her in a tumbling class and get a back hand spring. AllStar will help with performance; dance, learning choreo fast.... but doesn't translate to sideline cheer.

I have a 6th grader who has been cheering for 4 years and is working towards getting all her level 3 skills this season and is doing middle school and allstar teams. We’ve been on teams with girls much older than 11 with little to no tumbling so don’t stress, she’s not alone or behind, with tumbling everyone moves at their own pace. Privates over classes ALWAYS for tumbling, and I would also recommend strength and conditioning, it takes a lot of muscle groups to be a strong tumbler. Strong tumbling foundations (level 1) are so important.

Cheer mom here! I have 3 girls in cheer. They have been in cheer for 5 years now. My youngest was only 4 when she first started she is now 9 and just got her back hand spring down the last 3-4 months. My middle one is 11 and has all her tumbling (back handspring, back tucks, aerial, and working towards her layout). She just joined middle school cheer team this year and so far she’s loving it. I will say school cheer and competition cheer are completely different! My oldest is 15 next month and she just joined back after taking a year off. She just wants to stunt that’s her favorite part. To help my girls I had them all in gymnastics as well for a year. But the practices got too rough with my schedule so they didn’t go back. My girls cheer coaches are absolutely amazing so that’s a big deal! They have a tumbling class they take with their coaches as well so that helps a lot. I didn’t have to do anything for them but pay for their classes and then and their coaches did it all! My girls also push themselves to the limit to get to where they are. My youngest seen her big sister doing back tucks, back handsprings and everything. That’s what motivated her to do her back handspring and keep pushing forward because we all know siblings are competitive with one another. My younger two also play football and still practice tumbling at their games and practices lol.

Privates over classes 💯 also I’m not against your motto. Allstar cheer is not cheering for a sport we are the sport!

My daughter started cheer when she was 12 and in 7th grade. She also did not make her middle school cheer team because she didn’t have tumbling. She worked hard all year along on getting her back handsprings and she got it- the next tryouts, as an 8th grader she made it on the middle school team! A few months later she got her back tuck (both running and standing). Now she’s working on her layouts. She’s a freshmen and made the cheer comp team at her high school. She works on her tumbling every single day. Even on vacation, we always found a patch of grass that she can practice on. Good luck to your daughter!

I take my daughter to an acro studio for dancers. She’s also been in gymnastics since she was 2, she’s 12 now and would have the bare minimum for a comp cheer team. (She’s an intermediate dancer, can do back handspring, round off, aerial front, aerial side.) I’m just preparing you that it took my kid a decade to get all of that solid.
