Popeyes has nothing to do with the spinach eating sailor. 🍗 Al Copeland named his restaurant after Popeye Doyle, the detective from The French Connection, and the cartoon character only showed up on the signs years later, under license. And Copeland's first attempt failed. The stand opened in Arabi, Louisiana, sold mild chicken, lost money, and closed within months. He spent the next stretch rebuilding the seasoning until it had real heat, reopened, and never looked back. 🌶️ Second chances like that are all over this business. Harland Sanders was around 40 when he began feeding travelers out of a service station dining room in Corbin, Kentucky. He was past 60 before he sold his first franchise. His nephew, Lee Cummings, took the family knack to Lima, Ohio and built Lee's Famous Recipe. George W. Church Sr. opened his San Antonio counter directly across from the Alamo with no dining room at all.
