My biggest advice as a 20 yr vet: stop working so hard. Your students in ten years need you too. 130% for today’s kids will mean 50% for your future students.

Okay so not a teacher but I am an AuHD mom who homeschooled two children on the spectrum while in college and working by myself. Here’s what worked for preventing burn out: Lead by example for your students. Make self care and coping skills part of daily routines and lessons. The benefits from it are priceless and allow you to continue to be the best possible teacher without sacrificing yourself or quality of teaching now or later. Power naps, protein/nutrient dense snacks or shakes were mvps. Therapy. Therapy. Therapy. Cannot mention that enough. Yeah it’s hard to find time but there’s virtual appointments and more resources for actual teachers typically than parent teachers. Honestly worth the money. Create a carrot for yourself; plan a trip for during break x or a fun activity to reward your perseverance. If it gets too overwhelming as hard as asking for help may be; reach for it. Take time off to reset. Look into autism burnout prevention strategies. They work for neurotypicals as well. Burning out and/or “crashing out” helps no one. All else fails maybe consider a new career because no position is worth sacrificing your mental/physical health.

Be more like rainbow fish and not the giving tree! I have to remind myself this. Rainbow fish gives a very small piece of himself, but not too much. The giving tree gives everything until there’s nothing left to give. Don’t give too much of yourself while you’re at school find that happy medium!

It makes me feel a lot less alone in that when I see TikTok’s like this. I have no energy to live my life outside of school during the school year. Then I spend the entirety of the summer trying to regain that energy just to lose it again within weeks. No one else truly understands.

Set boundaries , if it can’t be done it working hours then either the workload is too much or your not working sufficiently. It’s time teachers stop letting schools take advantage of them.

Kindly, it doesn’t get better. The teachers I worked with told me to switch before it’s too late and pushed me to go back to school. I actually do want to have kids, travel, and have fun when I’m older and don’t want to loose that 😭

The tip is to not sit down when you get home, if you want to workout do it before you sit down after you get home otherwise you won’t lol

I struggled with this at my old school and vowed when I came to my new school that I wouldn’t let work control my social life. I still go out and hang out with friends after work and if I’m tired the next day, at least I had fun the night before
