@.carolgiselle: The REAL beginning of academic discourse in a first grade classroom. 🗣️📚 I created an academic discourse guide because discourse is truly the ESSENCE of my classroom. But with a brand-new class, I don’t expect it to magically happen perfectly on day one. I introduce it slowly. I model it. I repeat it. I practice it. And yes… in the beginning, it is VERY teacher-led. 😂 You’re going to hear me: ✨ Correct students ✨ Redirect conversations ✨ Remind them of the language ✨ Introduce hand signals ✨ Model what it should sound and look like ✨ Stop and practice AGAIN And that’s okay. I wanted to share the REAL, raw version of what this looks like during the first week of first grade because I think sometimes we only see the polished version once students have mastered it. But academic discourse is a SKILL. It has to be explicitly taught before students can independently do it. So yes, it’s repetitive. Yes, it’s a little messy. Yes, I’m doing a LOT of the talking and correcting in the beginning.
