In this stunning airshow moment, the pilot enters a spin maneuver—a dramatic and highly skilled aerobatic move that showcases precision and control. • What is a Spin? A spin occurs when an aircraft stalls asymmetrically, causing it to descend in a spiral while rotating around its vertical axis. It’s a combination of a stall and a yaw. • When and Why Does it Happen? • Intentionally during aerobatics to demonstrate control and recovery skills. • Unintentionally during training or poor handling, often due to: • Exceeding the critical angle of attack • Uncoordinated flight (rudder input imbalance) • Inadequate airspeed in a turn (especially in base-to-final) • The Danger of a Spin: If not recognized and corrected quickly, a spin can lead to: • Loss of altitude rapidly • Loss of control • Impact with terrain (CFIT – Controlled Flight Into Terrain) • How to Recover from a Spin: Pilots follow the PARE technique (general method – always refer to aircraft POH): 🔸 P – Power idle 🔸 A – Ailerons neutral 🔸 R – Rudder opposite to spin 🔸 E – Elevator forward to break the stall Once rotation stops: – Level the wings – Gently pull out of the dive – Resume controlled flight • Training and Awareness Save Lives Every pilot should be trained in stall and spin recovery, especially those in aerobatics, bush flying, or instructing.
