Throughout NW Indiana it’s actually around 320,000 of us who lost power last Tuesday and still don’t have it. Schools are not opening this month either. Pharmacies weren’t open either so even more life saving medication was destroyed.

i promise this isn’t racism. i live here in nwi, have my whole life. there’s plenty of other surrounding towns that still don’t have power going on day 11. what’s happened to our area is absolutely devastating, everyone has been impacted a great deal in some way or another. i thank you so much for using your big platform to bring attention to it but please don’t exclude everyone else who needs the help. hammond, east chicago, griffith, highland, merrillville. i hope everyone is staying safe ❤️

I live in Indianapolis, about 3 hours from Gary, and they are definitely not even talking about it much here either. I’d like Flint,MI all over again. It’s sad.

For the Hoosiers coming into the comments with “what about me”-ism, let’s stop and use our brains a bit, yeah? We know it’s not just Gary without power, we know it hit all of NWI and there’s still many without, but we know this because all those other cities are getting the news coverage and attention that Gary wasn’t receiving, which is why people online are bringing it to our attention. As a Hoosier myself I have seen countless news articles covering the devastation hitting many, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t notice that the areas being covered were predominately white. It wasn’t until coming online that I even heard Gary mentioned in these discussions. When we say it’s a racism issue, this is what we mean. A predominately black city also dealing with the same struggles is not being discussed in our local news so instead of seeing posts calling it out and being upset about not being included in the conversation, maybe stop and ask yourself why that may be

I'm in NW Indiana, I lost power for 3 days. I've definitely noticed that they seemed to prioritize the more affluent areas. Obviously they got the main roads/ highways / big shopping areas back up as fast as possible. But my mostly white town had power even before Community Hospital in Munster. It seems like the less white the town, the lower on the list they are.

Reporting from Gary. Cait. It’s fuuuuuuuucked here. Thank you for bringing attention. 95% of Lake county where Gary is was without power the day of the storm. Gary and its neighbor cities who are also mostly minorities and low income is being left LAST. We had to drive an hour away to get a generator. I can tell you ANY of the fucked up things going on.

I’m from central Indiana and the storms were BAD. It was a derecho, and it completely flooded entire neighborhoods near me, and schools were closed statewide. I absolutely think racism has a direct hand in why Gary is still out of power

I got my power back this morning after 9 days!!! I’m in Hammond, IN. It’s rough out here right now. People are also connecting their generators to the natural gas lines to power their homes and it’s causing fires within the power lines disrupting those with power. A couple hours ago thousands more were affected when transformers blew on a busy roadway.

I live in Gary and it has been rough. My projected restoration date is 8/25 which would be two weeks of no power. I don’t have a generator but have been spending money on food and gas to turn my truck on so I can charge our devices. I’m trying to keep my hopes up but its just really hard

I'm in Griffith also on day 10 of no power now. I hate it, but I cannot imagine how much worse it is for them. its already a food desert, got people robbing people for generators, it breaks my heart.

Gary Indiana here.. Tuesday will be 3 weeks with no power and a lot of people here don’t have running working water because a lot of us have well water. Stores are closed gas stations are closed or out of gas or impossible wait times. It’s been so so so so so awful I don’t wish this on anyone.
