if you teach them "package outside" to differentiate from "strange outside" maybe it's more easy. They know how to distinguish a person from an object. If the person leaves, it's a package; if someone stays there, it's strange.

My rescue mutt has been doing training for the past six months because she’s extremely afraid of people and movement. Every trainer I’ve consulted has said that she’s incredibly intelligent and absurdly sensitive to her environment. Basically, she notices everything happening around her, but she doesn’t know how to process or cope with the sheer amount of stimulation, so she ends up becoming overwhelmed and triggering a fear response. Sometimes I think she’s the kind of dog who would benefit from those communication buttons. She constantly seems like she’s in some kind of crisis, and it feels like she’s trying to communicate with us and tell us what she needs.
