📍 ANKARA | August 20, 2026 | HewadPress — Türkiye says it will continue supporting Syria and opposing what Ankara describes as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s “destabilizing activities,” as tensions between the two regional powers intensify following Israeli airstrikes on a Syrian military base. Burhanettin Duran, Türkiye’s presidential communications director, on Thursday told Turkey media Anadolu's that Ankara would stand alongside Syria and other regional countries pursuing policies aimed at peace and stability. Duran accused Netanyahu of increasingly using hostility toward Türkiye for domestic political purposes, saying the Israeli leader views tensions with Ankara as a “political lifeline.” He also argued that competition within Israeli politics was contributing to increasingly hostile rhetoric toward Türkiye and other countries in the region. The comments follow eight Israeli airstrikes on Syria’s Abu al-Duhur Military Airbase in Idlib province early Tuesday. The strikes damaged the runway and other infrastructure, but Syrian authorities reported no casualties. Israel has defended the operation, saying Syria was preparing to allow Turkish troops to deploy at the airbase and arguing that such a presence would pose a threat to Israeli security. Türkiye has rejected Israel’s allegations and accused Netanyahu’s government of using them to justify attacks violating Syrian sovereignty. Ankara has also denied having personnel at the airbase and says its military cooperation with Syria is focused on training and exchanging expertise. Türkiye’s Foreign Ministry condemned the Israeli strikes and called on the international community to take stronger action against attacks on Syrian territory. According to Reuters report, the dispute has also drawn an unusually sharp response from Washington. U.S. envoy Tom Barrack described the Israeli attack as an “unnecessary escalation” and said Washington is working to strengthen communication among Türkiye, Israel and Syria to prevent misunderstandings from developing into a wider military confrontation. The latest confrontation underscores growing Israeli-Turkish rivalry over Syria, where Türkiye has emerged as a major supporter of President Ahmed al-Sharaa’s government while Israel has expressed increasing concern about Ankara’s expanding military and political influence.
