If you machine it for a needle and a thrust bearing, you can mount a door that weighs a few THOUSAND pounds on it.

Thank you for this share of an excellent design. I have been spit-balling ideas for a bearing design for a bottom, load-bearing, vertical axis bearing for a vertical windmill project. Do you have any ideas for something with multiple ball bearings to more efficiently support the vertical loading?

will you put it upside down? so that the ball will rest inside the pipe, I can see some problems if you need to remove the door temporarily, like, where did that ball go... or trying to hold the ball in place at the same time that you try to place the door
