Americans are so propagandized. I am Canadian and live in the U.S. and the private system is just not better. I spend SO MUCH money for the privilege of having insurance that I can’t access until I spend more money. I had emergency surgery in Canada immediately when I needed it and am waiting months to get a mammogram in the U.S.

You know what is the longest wait time? It’s wait time for countries with universal health care to reject their system and adopt our system. Because it has never happened.

People wagging out about wait times should also factor in the idea that some folks entirely forego care because they cannot afford or cannot find a specialist for their needs. It is like how unemployment numbers are calculated in this country: folks who stop looking for work are no longer counted.

Wait times in Canada, the UK, etc are caused by Conservative politicians systematically underfunding the healthcare system any time they have a chance so they can usher in a private/public two-tier system to benefit the rich and eventually switch to a US-style private system so they can make more money off sick people.

Long wait times are more a factor of available doctors and providers. The system of training and retaining doctors has to be looked at when discussing wait times.

We don’t even have shorter wait times. I have to wait almost a year for an endocrinologist appt. Wait about 3 months for my annual mammogram.

In Massachusetts 97% of residents have healthcare coverage. You must carry health insurance that meets "Minimum Creditable Coverage". The Massachusetts Department of Revenue checks your coverage when you file your state income taxes. If you don’t have coverage and don’t qualify for an exemption, you must pay a monthly penalty fee on your state tax return. You don’t have to pay the penalty if the state considers insurance unaffordable for your income level.

Oh no, they waited 12 hours in the ER in Canada? Please, that’s not unusual.

Wait times have been going UP and my husband’s employer provides VERY good insurance. I have had to wait a year to get a new GYN in Ohio.

My theory is yes it would have an effect on wait times increasing PRIMARILY because of the amount of hospitals that have closed and those areas/communities would be funneled to other hospitals thus overloading certain healthcare systems. Just my thoughts

I also wonder how universal Healthcare affects staffing and pay for Healthcare workers. having better staffing at hospitals would also positively affect wait times.

That's the part of this argument that really gets me. That we should prioritize shorter wait times at the expense of excluding portions of the population from accessing care. It feels like such an unethical perspective.

Have you read Abdul El-Sayed’s book on M4All? I think it’s fantastic and he addresses this! He admitted that for single payer to work effectively , there would have to be a concerted effort to also increase the supply of doctors.

Completely shutting the idea down is silly, we can address the wait times as well as make sure we all have health care. Great video, very informative!

As a chronically ill person I’m less concerned about wait times and more concerned about whether we would properly fund our healthcare. Most of the bad experiences I’ve heard about from my friends in the UK and Canada have been related to the fact that their healthcare is poorly funded by the government and it’s limiting patients’ access to diagnostics and specialists. I’m all for medicare for all, or whichever system of universal healthcare the US can (hopefully) make happen, but yeah the funding part scares me because i don’t have faith in our government at all.

It took me 5 months to get into a primary doctor on regular insurance and between when I first made the appointment and when I got there they dropped my insurer so I had to pay out of pocket.
