KIDNAPPING REPORTED IN IGARRA, AKOKO-EDO LGA Information reaching us indicates that a young man was reportedly kidnapped at about 9:00 p.m. last night around the back of the Central Mosque in Igarra, Akoko-Edo LGA, Edo State. According to information gathered, the victim had reportedly patronised a commercial motorcycle rider, who took him from his shop to a location where he went to purchase something before heading home. On his way home, they allegedly encountered a group of armed kidnappers. The young man reportedly jumped off the motorcycle and was immediately taken hostage, while the motorcycle rider, said to be an “Aboki” rider, was allowed to leave. There are also reports that people in the area immediately alerted local vigilante groups and called on them to pursue the kidnappers before they could escape into the forest. However, it is alleged that the vigilantes initially declined, claiming they did not have ammunition. Even after reportedly receiving ₦35,000 to support the operation, they allegedly still did not enter the bush. These reports raise serious concerns about the safety of residents, the activities of commercial motorcycle operators and the effectiveness of local security arrangements. MOST RECENTLY, THE KIDNAPPERS HAVE ALLEGEDLY CONTACTED THE VICTIM’S FAMILY AND DEMANDED ₦100 MILLION FOR HIS RELEASE. We are therefore calling on the Edo State Government, security agencies, local vigilante groups and relevant authorities to urgently intervene, intensify security operations in Igarra and do everything within the law to secure the safe release of the victim.
