@apeprof: Some chimpanzee play to cleanse your fyp. Chimpanzees are NOT pets. The exotic pet trade harms them and other endangered species. 📷 All footage by me. Thanks to the Ngogo Chimpanzee project of Kibale National Park, Uganda. #chimpanzee #Science #evolution #wildlife #Science
are Bonobos aggressive at all? I understand they are way more social and gentle but wondering if it's generally safer to be around

They’re actually not wasting energy on play this is actually a behavior where they talk about trade and ownership of bananas, often referred to as monkey business.

As someone exposed to their natural habitat and behaviour. Can you give your professional pov about the ongoing dispute about who wins in a fight between an above average human vs an average chimpanzee. thanks!

It is a mistake to compare all of humanity with chimpanzees. I’m not sure how you were raised, but I was raised to believe humans are closer in behavior to the orangutan and bonobo. Please don’t make sweeping interpretations that make it seem all of humanity is aggressive.

I suspect there’s some commitments to reductionism to proffer speculative theories in primatology by some researchers (?). If natural selection accounts for all variation in spontaneous acts of joy, then me typing this message becomes some implicit fitness-function. Maybe it is—or maybe, to reference a quote attributed to Freud, “Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.” (this approach will not satisfy an incessantly questioning researcher, I know, haha).

teaching how to socialize, and practicing politics seems like something that would be SUPER important for Chimpanzees

i remember hearing something about juvenile apes using "imagination" to play, aimlessly running around trees seemingly by themselves, and i found it fascinating, every year something we thought was human-exclusive ends up being just a regular ape thing, from tools to culture to social bonds to play etc

I would really enjoy hearing videos about individual personalities that stand out to you. I work with rats and enjoy when their personalities stand out I can only imagine how much more complex chimpanzee personalities are.
