Some doors don't open because you knock harder. They open after you have walked away. The same is true of people. We often believe that if someone doesn't value us, we simply haven't explained ourselves well enough. So we argue, sacrifice, forgive too quickly, and try even harder. But most people don't recognize value because you describe it. They recognize it because life eventually compares it. Think about that. The friend who took your loyalty for granted may only understand it after being betrayed. The employee who left for a higher salary may discover that respect isn't included in every pay check. The partner who chased excitement may eventually realise that peace is rarer than passion. Life has a way of teaching lessons that words cannot. Here's the hidden pattern: people don't always reject you. Sometimes they reject the version of you they think will always be there. Certainty makes people comfortable. Comfort often makes people careless. Read that again. Psychologists have long observed that people tend to appreciate things more after experiencing their absence. Familiarity can make genuine value invisible, while novelty can make ordinary things seem extraordinary. That doesn't excuse poor choices, but it helps explain them. If someone comes back, it doesn't automatically mean they love you more than before. It may simply mean reality became a better teacher than you ever could. Experience changes standards faster than advice. Now comes the uncomfortable question. If they returned today, would they be choosing you... or escaping the consequences of their own decisions? Think about it. Now here comes another one. Have you grown enough to recognise the difference between if they will choose you or escaping the consequences of not having you? The greatest mistake isn't believing people can change. It's believing that every change deserves another chance. Most times, the change is a placeholder until another opportunity shows up. Life often finishes the conversations people refused to have with you. What do you think matters more when someone comes back: the sincerity of their return, or the wisdom you've gained while they were gone?
