Chance is a 2-year-old Pit Bull who had arrived only a week earlier after being rescued from a dog-fighting operation. He had reportedly been used as a bait dog, leaving him with fresh injuries across his body and emotional wounds that were much harder to see. Since arriving at the shelter, Chance had barely responded to anyone. He refused food, hardly moved and spent his time pressed against the kennel wall, trembling as he stared fearfully at everything around him. Then there was Moses. Moses is a 12-year-old Saint Bernard who has reportedly lived at the shelter for four years. Again and again, potential adopters passed him by because of his age, enormous size and the expense that can come with caring for a dog like him. With the shelter running out of space, workers decided to put Moses and Chance together for the night. According to security footage timestamped 11:47 p. m., Moses eventually woke and noticed the younger dog shaking badly. The enormous Saint Bernard, weighing more than 180 pounds, slowly got to his feet. Despite his intimidating size, there was nothing threatening about the way he approached the frightened Pit Bull. Moses carefully moved closer and lowered himself beside Chance. Then he gently placed his huge head over the younger dog's shoulders. He didn't push him or demand anything from him. He simply stayed there, offering quiet companionship to a dog who had every reason to be afraid. When shelter workers returned the next morning, something had changed. Chance was no longer trembling. Instead, he had curled himself against Moses and was peacefully asleep — reportedly the first restful sleep he had experienced since being rescued. The shelter director later explained that this wasn't the first time Moses had helped a frightened dog. Over his four years at the rescue, Moses had reportedly comforted 17 dogs who arrived abused and terrified. Yet through all those years, nobody had chosen to take Moses home. He may still be waiting for someone to choose him, but during that wait, he has helped 17 frightened dogs understand something they desperately needed to learn — what it feels like to be safe. Sometimes, the ones who keep getting overlooked are the very ones capable of bringing comfort to those who are barely holding on.
