@heidydavilatherapy: The emotional weight of a statement remains tied to the language in which it was initially encountered. For example, an individual could recount childhood experiences in English, even if their first language is different, and maintain physiological calm throughout the detailed description. This implies that while the description itself is accurate, the underlying emotional material might remain somewhat detached or 'out of reach' when processed in a secondary language. #Bilingualism #Psychology #LanguageAndEmotion #California #AutonomicResponse

This is why culturally adaptive practices are so important! I have to go back and find the references, but when I was conducting research on culturally adaptive therapeutic modalities, a common through line was the importance of the use of “dichos” and native languages to create effective therapeutic processes! ☺️

You know what, you make a great point! If our childhood experiences were in a Spanish household, accessing that psyche would be easier having sessions in Spanish, or at least a bilingual approach. Hadn’t thought of it that way. Thank you for sharing.

I don’t know you but I am SO Proud of YOU! This brought tears 😭. I’m a first generation special education teacher and I always feel like our kids are being treated like a number instead of an individual. I wish there was more bilingualism education across all education and healthcare.

It’s near impossible to find a practitioner that fits all the boxes. The age and gender of the practitioner also play a huge part in making it a great fit and then there’s insurance, of course. If you do find that unicorn practitioner, they would have to be in network.

The only way to express my feelings honestly is in Spanish. For that same reason, I created a space to write together with other Latinas 😍
