Winter froze, her own new umbrella still closed in her hand, forgotten. The sight of Karina leaning against the railing patient, steady, and looking like a vision in the middle of the downpour made the air leave Winter's lungs. Karina’s eyes locked onto hers, and that same small, knowing smile returned. She didn't say anything at first; she just tilted the black umbrella slightly, creating an invitation. "I see you're prepared this time," Karina said, her voice a low hum that vibrated through the humid air. Winter felt a flush creep up her neck that had nothing to do with the weather. "You... you waited for me? How did you even know I'd be here?" "I have a feeling about these things," Karina replied vaguely, stepping closer. As she did, a gust of wind swept through the street, shaking the nearby cherry blossom trees. A flurry of pale pink sakura petals spiraled down, landing in the dark puddles and clinging to the damp fabric of Winter’s cardigan. One petal landed right on Winter's cheek. Without thinking, Karina reached out. Her fingers were cool, but her touch was electric as she brushed the petal away. The gesture was so intimate, so sudden, that Winter forgot how to breathe. "Come on," Karina murmured. "You're shivering again." This time, Winter didn't hesitate. She folded her own umbrella and stepped into the sanctuary of the black nylon. The world shrunk again just the two of them, the rhythmic drumming of the rain, and the scent of Karina’s perfume, something that smelled like expensive sandalwood and a hint of ozone. They walked in a comfortable, charged silence toward the small corner café they had passed before. As they pushed open the heavy glass door, a wave of warmth and the rich aroma of roasted beans enveloped them. In the background, the soft, upbeat melody of JVKE’s "This Is What Falling In Love Feels Like" began to play, the lyrics blending perfectly with the frantic drumming of Winter's heart. They found a small table by the window, where they could watch the rain blur the city into a watercolor painting. Karina shed her trench coat, revealing a sleek black turtleneck that made her look even more striking. "I'm Karina," she said, finally offering her name. "Winter," she whispered, clutching her tote bag. "Winter," Karina repeated, the name sounding like a secret on her tongue. "A cold name for someone who looks so warm." Over two lattes and a shared slice of cake, the tension shifted from nervous to magnetic. Winter found herself opening her sketchbook, showing Karina the charcoal drawings of cityscapes and lonely streetlamps. Karina didn't just glance at them; she studied them, her gaze intense and appreciative. "You see the world in a very beautiful, lonely way," Karina noted, her hand resting on the table, inches from Winter's. "I used to," Winter admitted, looking up to find Karina watching her with an expression that was no longer guarded. It was soft, almost moonstruck?... As they eventually stepped back out into the rain to part ways, the atmosphere had changed. The rain was still heavy, but it no longer felt cold. When Karina leaned in to whisper a promise to see her again tomorrow, her breath hitched against Winter's ear, and for a moment, the rest of the world disappeared. Fate hadn't just wrapped them together; it had tied a knot that neither of them wanted to undo. As Winter watched Karina walk away, she realized she wasn't looking at the forecast anymore. She was just waiting for the next storm. "soulmates destined"... a man thought..he knew always knew..the way he met his wife 28 years ago..in this same exact place.
