The Gombe State-born Qur’anic reciter emerged first in the women’s category for Hizb 60 with Tafsir, becoming the first female champion following the introduction of women into the competition. Her achievement is even more remarkable given her family’s record in international Qur’anic competitions. Her elder sister, Hajara Ibrahim Dan’Azumi, represented Nigeria at the 18th International Women’s Qur’anic Competition in Jordan in 2024 and emerged champion. The success of the two sisters has placed the Dan’Azumi family among the notable Qur’anic families from Gombe State, with both siblings achieving international recognition through Qur’anic recitation. Maryam’s historic victory has also drawn congratulations from Professor Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, who commended her achievement and described it as a source of pride for her family, teachers, Gombe State and Nigeria. For Maryam, however, this is more than another competition victory. She has become the first woman to win after women were admitted to the 46-year-old competition—a historic achievement that opens a new chapter for female Qur’anic reciters on the international stage.
