@treatmyocd: 5 signs your anxiety might actually be OCD: 1️⃣ A lot of your anxiety revolves around intrusive thoughts that feel disturbing or completely out of character: A thought, image, or urge can suddenly pop into your head and feel impossible to dismiss. You may become fixated on why you had it, what it says about you, or whether it could actually happen. 2️⃣ You feel a strong need to get certainty about your fears: Questions like “What if I hurt someone?” “What if I don’t actually love my partner?” or “What if I’m secretly a bad person?” can feel like they need an answer. Even when you find one that makes you feel better, the doubt eventually comes back. 3️⃣ You do things specifically to make the anxiety or thought go away: You might check, seek reassurance, confess, Google, repeat something, or avoid triggers because you feel like you need to reduce the distress, get certainty, or prevent something bad from happening. These can be compulsions. 4️⃣ Your overthinking feels like something you have to finish: You may replay a memory, analyze your feelings, or review a conversation over and over because you feel like you need to reach the “right” answer before you can move on. When that thinking is being used to get certainty or relieve distress, it can be a mental compulsion. 5️⃣ Feeling better never seems to last: You finally check, get reassurance, or reach an answer that makes you feel better, but then another “what if?” appears. You end up repeating the same process again because the relief from compulsions is usually temporary. Anxiety and OCD can overlap, and people with OCD often experience a lot of anxiety. But OCD involves a cycle of obsessions and compulsions. Intrusive thoughts, images, urges, or doubts create distress, and compulsions are performed to try to relieve that distress, gain certainty, or prevent a feared outcome. That cycle can be what separates OCD symptoms from anxiety that may look similar on the surface. If you recognize this cycle in yourself, OCD specialized treatment can help.
