"Exactly-once delivery" does not exist at the network layer. ⚡ It exists at the application layer, and it's just at-least-once wearing a hat. Here's the whole thing with real numbers 👇 Setup: 12 messages. 2 acknowledgements get lost. 🟢 AT MOST ONCE — fire and forget Send it. Never retry. 📊 10 delivered · 2 lost · 0 duplicates 💥 You silently lose messages and never find out. No error, no alert, no gap in a log. Fine for metrics and heartbeats. Not fine for payments. 🔵 AT LEAST ONCE — retry until acked No ack? Send it again. The message wasn't lost — the ACK was. 📊 14 arrived · 12 unique · 2 duplicates 💥 The consumer processes the same event twice. If that event is "charge the card," you just charged twice. 🟣 EXACTLY ONCE — dedupe on arrival At-least-once, plus an idempotency key and a store of keys you've already seen. 📊 14 arrived · 2 rejected · 12 delivered 💥 You now maintain a dedupe store forever, with its own TTL and its own failure modes. 👀 The one nobody says: nothing in the middle three bands changed the network. All three sent the same messages over the same lossy link. The only difference is who cleans up afterwards — nobody, the consumer, or a key. That's why "exactly-once" is a broker marketing term. Kafka's version is exactly-once *within Kafka*, in a transaction. The moment your consumer writes to Postgres or calls Stripe, you're back to at-least-once and the idempotency key is yours to build. 🎯 The rule: pick at-least-once, then make your consumer idempotent. That IS exactly-once. If you can't write down what makes a message unique, you don't have a delivery guarantee. You have a hope. 📸 Screenshot it before your next queue design.
