Long ago, in the 17th century, the ancient land of Oguaa was struck by a terrible plague. Death swept through the community, and the people watched helplessly as many of their loved ones were taken away. In their darkest hour, the people of Oguaa turned to the spiritual powers they had always trusted. They called upon their 77 gods and their ancestors, pleading for protection, healing, and the restoration of their land. Then, as the story is passed down through generations, the plague finally came to an end. The people rejoiced. But they knew that the land had been deeply troubled. So, in gratitude to the gods and ancestors, and as a way of cleansing the land from the impurities of the plague, they established a great annual celebration. They called it Fetu Afahye a name associated with the clearing away of dirt and impurities and from that moment, a sacred tradition was born. The Sacred Journey of Wonnhyia But before the people of Oguaa could celebrate Fetu, something very important had to happen. The Wonnhyia had to be performed. Wonnhyia is not simply a walk. It is a sacred spiritual journey, a journey of visitation, invocation, purification, and thanksgiving. Led by the Oguaa Omanhene and his Elders, together with the Akomfo, the procession sets out on its spiritual mission. Along the way, songs rise into the air, rituals are performed, and the gods of Oguaa are greeted and invited to join the year's celebration. The journey reaches Mfantsipim Junction, where a significant ceremony is performed to invite all 77 gods of Oguaa. From there, the spiritual journey continues to Aboom, where they greet Nana Adua and perform his sacred rite. Then they proceed to Aquarium Bus Station, where the gods associated with Junkwa and Effutu are invited to take part in the celebration. The journey continues to Bakaano Roundabout, where they meet Nana Fosu. They greet him, sing for him, and invite him to the year's Fetu Afahye. But the journey is far from over. They continue to Aponkye Nkakra, where they meet Nana Etuay and perform the necessary rites. From there, the procession makes its way through Victoria Park, Nkumfo and Truom, visiting and acknowledging sacred spiritual powers including Nana Bebreku, Nana Tabir and Nana Fenyinam. At every stop, there is a purpose. Every greeting carries meaning. Every song is an invocation. Every ritual is part of the spiritual cleansing of Oguaa. The Three Gunshots And then comes the moment everyone waits for. After the long journey of visitation, invitation and purification, the silence is finally broken. Three gunshots thunder across the land. The sound travels through Cape Coast, announcing something far greater than the noise itself: The spiritual ban has been lifted. The Nananom and the Akomfo rejoice. They embrace. They celebrate. For they believe that the spiritual work has been completed and that the people of Oguaa are now spiritually protected and free to prepare for the great celebration of Fetu Afahye. And then comes one of the most mysterious parts of the tradition. *The Rain of Wonnhyia* The elders say that Wonnhyia night is often accompanied by rain. Some see it simply as nature. Others see something deeper a spiritual cleansing, as though the heavens themselves are joining the people in washing away the impurities of the land. And tonight, once again, the rain has fallen. Perhaps it is only rain. Or perhaps, as the old stories of Oguaa remind us, it is another chapter in a legend that has been carried from generation to generation. For in Oguaa, Fetu is not merely a festival. It is a story of survival. It is a story of faith. It is a story of cleansing. And Wonnhyia is the sacred journey that prepares the land for the celebration to begin. #oguaa #fetuafahye #fyp #FetuAfahye2026 #capecoastghana @MR.
