Just to clear up some confusion: guys this isn't the first lung transplant ever! The very first human lung transplant actually happened back in 1963 (and the first long-term successful one was in 1983 in Toronto). What’s new here is the UK testing a new 3-hospital network that uses perfusion machines to test and prep lungs before surgery, so way fewer donated organs get wasted!

For everyone in the comments who apparently don’t understand how transplants like these work: You or you family have to consent to being an organ donor. Medical professionals will not refuse to save you just because you are an organ donor, that’s fear mongering. Lung donation has to come from a DECEASED donor, (aka dead).

Very clean looking lung tissues. Wow, so beautiful, well maintained. ~ Obviously, the donor is no longer with us. He/she must have been a very healthy person who probably had a traumatic, irreversible fatal injury. May his or her memory be a blessing.🙏🏿
