The continued detention of former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, deserves serious concern from people of conscience, particularly given his significant contributions to the political journey that produced the present administration at both the state and national levels. As governor of Kaduna State, El-Rufai governed for eight years and played a major role in shaping the political structure that supported the emergence of the current leadership in the state. At the national level, he was also an important political ally and contributor to the efforts that ultimately produced President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, despite the considerable political challenges along the way. It is therefore ironic, and deeply troubling to many observers, that the same political establishment that benefited from El-Rufai’s contributions now finds itself at the centre of circumstances surrounding his present legal predicament. The allegations against him should, of course, be subjected to due process, and nobody should be above the law. However, where the law permits bail, justice should also be guided by fairness, proportionality and respect for fundamental rights. If bail has been granted but attached conditions are so stringent that they effectively prevent the accused from regaining his freedom, serious questions naturally arise about whether the spirit of bail is being respected. This situation is particularly concerning considering that El-Rufai reportedly had no original intention of serving in the present administration but was persuaded by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to participate. If true, the circumstances make his present treatment even more difficult for his supporters and political associates to understand. Political disagreements and differences in interest are normal in a democracy. However, political differences should never become a justification for persecution, vindictiveness or the abandonment of the principles of justice. Many Nigerians may disagree with Mallam Nasir El-Rufai's politics or policies, but that should not diminish his constitutional rights. The appropriate place to determine his guilt or innocence is the court, not political sentiment. Whatever the political circumstances surrounding his case, justice must remain the guiding principle. The government must demonstrate that this matter is being handled strictly in accordance with the law and without political vendetta. If a man once considered a trusted political ally can suddenly become a target of prolonged detention, it should concern every Nigerian who believes in the rule of law. Political loyalty may change, but justice must remain constant. The Federal Government should therefore ensure that El-Rufai's fundamental rights are protected, that his trial proceeds without unnecessary delay, and that any bail conditions imposed are reasonable and consistent with the principles of justice. This is not about whether one supports El-Rufai or opposes him. It is about whether Nigeria will continue to uphold the principles of fairness, due process and the rule of law. Justice should never be a reward for loyalty, nor should detention become a punishment for political disagreement.
