Saint Agatha was crowned today in a historic ceremony under Pope Leo XIV, and Catania has waited 900 years for this moment. 🙏 Today, Saint Agatha was solemnly crowned in Catania by Cardinal Parolin, Pontifical Legate of Pope Leo XIV, as the city marked the 900th anniversary of the return of her relics. On August 17, 1126, the relics of the third-century virgin and martyr were brought home to Catania from Constantinople. Nine centuries later, thousands retraced that historic homecoming in a 7.5 km pilgrimage through the city to Piazza Duomo. There, Saint Agatha’s skull was presented for the veneration of the faithful before being placed inside her magnificent reliquary bust. Her other relics were returned to the silver reliquary casket.
