I work abroad, I address a white colleague that is his 60’s by his first name, while I address a Nigerian colleague that is his 40’s with Mr.+ his first name. They are both my boss and I am way younger than them. Understand the culture of those you are engaging with.

She get mind shaa. I’m a researcher in Europe. I remember my first meeting with my supervisor he said I should call him Peter not Prof Peter. I told him I can’t sir. I’m not comfortable calling you just Peter. He smiled and said it’s fine you can call me Prof Peter. I’m an African I have installed value. Can I dare call my lecturer by name in Nigeria. ? Funny enough after that our first meeting he treats me differently from other researchers in the lab. He treats me with respect, and we are more close. He calls me Mr Adeiza. Nobody in life who doesn’t want you to respect him and honour his efforts in life. As an Africans we have values, culture and heritage, currently we are adopting too much from the west and it’s wrong.

If they go abroad they won’t have problem with younger people calling them by their names. Ok. You can call people by their names and still show respect and you can use sir/ma but in your heart you’re disrespecting them
