@jakeatwork: Me trying to change one number in the company‘s 12-year-old Excel file... and hoping nothing explodes. #officehumor #corporate #workmemes #worklife #teamwork #fyp
As a GenX I must say this one of the few sins we have left for others to deal with. At the time we were just so damn tired of the boomers doing everything on paper that we wrote a bunch of excel sheets to cut them out of the loop. We all assumed that the data would at some point be incorporated into a real system after the boomers retired. Non of us imagined that you poor souls would still be using the same sheets decades later. I’m sorry it was ment to be a temporary clutch.

Save as copy. F with the copy. If it works don’t touch the original. Now pass on both copies.

The old dinosaur coder in me has a tab on all my spreadsheets that tells you what all the formulas do. It is simply titled “notes“ 🤣

I inherited one of these once. I maintained it and at the same time on the side I completely reverse engineered it, then started redeveloping it in Power BI before eventually recreating the whole thing in Tableau Prep when I got that license and certification. I automated the updates to the Excel and created Tableau dashboards to replace all the visuals. Once everything was loaded on the servers, I blew their minds.

Save a copy on your desk top and make your changes there that way you leave the original file untouched until you know it all works

Duh, Well you should make a copy just in case you break it. IT can’t fix everything 🙄

We have one excel "xls" remaining from 1999 that we do not mess with.

I like when they put passwords on documents and nobody is still with the company, who knows what they are.

And there’s always reference to an original calculation on another spreadsheet from a report that an engineer from 20 years ago kept on his own computer and quit.
