The florida project is so underrated. Yes, the us child welfare system sucks, but in the context of the movie, family separation was necessary. Spoilers: from the beginning of the movie, moonee is clearly a victim of neglect. She’s supposed to be like 6 years old, and she has absolutely no adult supervision for most of the day outside of Bobby, the hotel manager who looks out for her. She starts by committing minor crimes (minor theft, mild vandalism) but it escalates to trespassing, arson and physical assault. In the meantime, her moms main source of income is doing sw out of their motel room. She puts moonee in the bath with headphones on while she is in the room with clients. The movie doesn’t villainize the mom, but it’s clear that she is not able to meet her child’s needs in a safe, stable home environment. The movie offers a thoughtful, nuanced look at poverty, sw and hidden homelessness. It’s just an incredible film that deserves so much more hype. Like you first see the world through moonees eyes and it’s magical, and then you take a step back and see the dire reality of the situation. It’s also funny and not just doom and gloom.
