The system won’t accept you in unless your esta is valid. Esta is valid for 2 years if I’m not mistaken

It’s linked to your passport number so if it was no longer good they wouldn’t be able to let you board

im not sure but doesnt the us require APIs? (advanced passenger information). most likely they asked you to enter your passport number when checking in and if you didnt have esta or a visa they would've contacted you
