At a Colorado wedding in September 2016, an 80-pound senior dog became part of a moment his family would never forget. Charlie Bear, a 15-year-old Labrador mix battling a brain tumor, was too weak to finish walking down the aisle, so the bride's sister picked him up and carried him. Charlie had been part of Kelly O'Connell's life since she was 19. She first met him while working at an animal shelter in New York, where the puppy had arrived after being found abandoned in a shopping cart outside a grocery store. Kelly was studying to become a veterinarian and had not planned to adopt a dog, but she decided to take Charlie home. Over the next 14 years, he accompanied her through school, moves, relationships, and the beginning of her career. When Kelly met fellow veterinarian James Garvin, Charlie became part of their growing family. The couple planned their wedding for September 2016 in Colorado, but several months before the ceremony, Charlie suffered a seizure and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. His health declined, and in the week leading up to the wedding he experienced several more seizures. Kelly worried that he might not live long enough to attend. On the wedding day, Charlie was well enough to join the celebration. He spent time with family members and was included in the ceremony. But as the wedding party began moving along the aisle, he became too tired to continue walking. Kelly's sister and maid of honor, Katie Lloyd, bent down and lifted the 80-pound dog into her arms. Wedding photographer Jen Dziuvenis captured Katie carrying Charlie, with the bride and groom nearby. Kelly later described how emotional it was to see the dog who had accompanied her through so much of her adult life now needing to be carried. The photographs quickly spread online, touching people who understood what it meant to watch a beloved pet grow old. Charlie died on September 9, 2016, eight days after the wedding, at home surrounded by his family. Kelly and James had been able to include him in one of the most important celebrations of their lives. The photographs remain a record of that day, including the quiet act of care that allowed Charlie to stay with his family when walking became too difficult.
