The discomfort of being observed mid-task rarely has anything to do with the task. When early learning happened under close, critical watching, observation stopped registering as interest and started registering as inspection, a prelude to correction. The adult version freezes when someone reads over their shoulder, and works beautifully the moment they leave. Nothing about the ability changes in that moment. Only the felt safety does, and safety, for a watched child, always lived in the unobserved spaces.
