@askpaindoc: Chronic illness has a way of turning patients into experts on their own medical history. After enough appointments, referrals, medication trials, procedures, and new doctors, you start learning exactly how to tell the story. What happened first. What you’ve tried. What helped. What didn’t. What changed. Sometimes the patient knows the timeline better than the chart does, because they’ve been the one living it and explaining it over and over again. And when a patient comes in knowing their history that well, it can make the conversation a whole lot easier. #chronicillness #chronicpain #patientadvocacy #painmanagement #spoonie

It’s not like you guys give us a choice. We have to be up on what’s happening with us because you’re not, we have to advocate for ourselves over and over and over again and that’s the frustrating part because for us you’re a 15 minute appointment so we have to give you as much information as we can trying to get some sort of diagnosis or treatment or result when you guys are thinking about the next person you’ve gotta get to meanwhile, we’ve waited weeks or months for this appointment and then you wonder why we’re emotional or stressed out…put yourself in our shoes.

I literally had to explain my anti-anxiety med isn't prescribed for anxiety, it's to control the inappropriate norepinephrine releases from hyperadrenergic POTS to a doctor last week. I also explained hyperadrenergic vs hypovolemic presentations and why salt wasn't always the answer for me. She told me it was suspicious that I knew that much 🙄 That will be the last time I see her

I have a list of all surgeries and important other events. No need to memorize. Okay, the list was (probably) created by my parents when I stopped breathing after a shunt revision and got an emergency surgery to check if there was a major problem. Since then every surgery has an exact date

I remember a hospital pharmacist being blow anyway by my reeling off all 14 of my medications, doses and uses 😂 He said he was very impressed and asked if I worked in the medical field, never grinned so much 😂

Yeah I had no choice when I realized my GP hadn’t updated my chart in ten years…and within those ten years I gained over 20 chronic medical conditions and experienced multiple medical emergencies. We definitely don’t do it because we want to, we have no choice.

I made a pre op nurse nervous recently with all my info and the terms I knew. She tried to casually slide in the “so what do you do for work? Are you in the medical field?” Nope, just chronically ill😂 we laughed about it. She’s not the first one I’ve freaked out. I had a hospitalist once tilt his head and say “you ask really good questions…” one nurse heard me say a medical term and she whipped her head around so fast with wide eyes. I was like girl you’re good. I’m not a nurse or anything.

and when ONE doctor writes something that's wrong and you spend the next 5 years fighting to get the error removed cuz no doctor believes you over the chart

Oh my gosh! Don't ever make the mistake of going into a new patient appointment acting like you know what is happening with your own body. Doctors hate that. If you have too much knowledge then Doctors think you're too well versed and must be gaslighting them. When , in my personal experience. they are doing the gaslighting. Imo.

I have a new Physio Therapist and she said she had some questions. I started telling my medical history and she said "I guess I have no questions, because you just told me everything I wanted to ask" Not sure if that's a good thing 🙄

imagine being gaslighted for so long you no longer have the brain capability to remember everything because everything was fine so why did I have to before...

What irritates me is when a DR tells you you have something and then never adds it to your chart.
