Nearly 40,000 bottles of Clear Eyes Maximum Itchy Eye Relief are being recalled because of a lack of assurance of sterility and potential contamination. The affected product is Lot 2552A, expiration September 30, 2027. (CBS News) As an eye doctor, the bigger story for me is the pattern. I have never seen this many eye drop recalls throughout my career. Over the past few years, we have repeatedly seen eye drops pulled from shelves because of sterility, contamination, and manufacturing concerns. So why does this seem to be happening so frequently now? That is something I think we need to be paying much closer attention to. If you’re dealing with itchy, allergy-related eyes, other OTC options I commonly recommend include Pataday or Lastacaft. If your main concern is redness, Lumify may be another option to consider. But remember: red, irritated, painful, light-sensitive, or discharge-producing eyes are not always “just allergies.” If you’re concerned about an infection or your symptoms aren’t improving, talk with your local eye doctor.
