Luci Jockel is an American jewelry and metalsmithing artist who created a piece called the Gold Veil using thousands of real honey bee wings. She carefully glued each wing with archival glue, making a detailed and delicate work of art. The veil was made from wings of bees that had already passed away, and she never harmed any bees herself. To collect the wings, Jockel reached out to local beekeepers. One beekeeper, Paul Whewell, gave her wings after losing his bees during a harsh winter. She also used wings from hives on top of museums in New York and from her father’s hives. The bees passed away from different causes, including cold weather, mites, pesticides, and other natural problems. The Gold Veil is meant to honor honey bees and raise awareness about their decline. Bees are very important because they pollinate many plants—about 85% of the plants on Earth—helping grow food and supporting the environment. Jockel’s work is recognized and respected. It is included in museum collections, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and has been featured by the American Craft Council and other art organizations. The veil is a real, documented piece of art that combines beauty with a message about protecting bees and nature.
