@hopewithholly: I’m not racist because I grew up white trash. 😂 Hear me out. I’m not saying growing up poor or white automatically makes someone less racist. And I’m definitely not saying I’m magically free from unconscious bias. We all absorb messages from the culture we grow up in, and we all have a responsibility to examine them. I’m talking about my own story. I grew up poor, in the country, surrounded mostly by white people. And the people who hurt me, scared me, judged me, and made life difficult were also white people. Then I went to school and actually got to know Black people. One of the adults who made me feel seen and encouraged was my music teacher, Mrs. Matthews, a Black woman who believed in me enough to put me in front of the entire school to sing at my sixth-grade graduation. So the idea that white automatically meant “better,” “safer,” “smarter,” or “more moral” never matched my actual life. I learned pretty young that somebody’s character has nothing to do with the color of their skin. It has everything to do with how they treat people.
