#CALIGULA | Caligula was emperor of Rome from AD 37 to 41. He was the great-grandson of Augustus and the son of the popular general Germanicus. At first, Caligula’s reign began with high hopes, the people loved him because he was young, charming, and the heir of a beloved family. But only months into his rule, he suffered a severe illness that seemed to change his personality dramatically. Afterward, he became increasingly unstable, paranoid, and cruel. As emperor, Caligula aimed to strengthen his personal power and elevate himself to a god-like status. He demanded worship, built temples in his honor, and even referred to himself as a living deity. He drained the Roman treasury with lavish spending on games, monuments, and personal luxuries. His major mistakes were his cruelty and disrespect toward the Senate and army, the two groups he most needed to maintain power. He executed or exiled nobles without reason, mocked Rome’s traditions, and created widespread fear in his court. Ultimately, his reckless behavior and tyranny led to his assassination by the Praetorian Guard in AD 41. Caligula is remembered as one of Rome’s most infamous and mad emperors, a symbol of absolute power gone insane, though some historians think later writers exaggerated his madness to justify his murder. So while his cruelty and excess were real, the portrait of him as a raving lunatic, the emperor who made his horse a consul and waged war on the sea, may be a carefully sharpened myth, crafted to make his downfall seem not only justified, but necessary. History often murders a man twice, once with the sword, and again with the pen. #fyp #rome #aesthetic #History
