Today I learned someone put a thermometer in a hibernating Arctic ground squirrel’s butt.

On the other end, the highest internal body is, the sombre humming bird for a maintained baseline temperature of 4°5C, but the highest peak temperature is the red-billed quelea which can survive spikes of up to 49°C during extreme environmental heat and physical exertion with no ill effects. Fun side note, if the sombre hummingbird was the size of a human, its extreme metabolism would require almost 150,000 calories a day just to survive.

Hibernation is still madness as far as I’m concerned. We just acknowledge these animals do it but in reality why on earth can an animal sleep in Baltic weather for months and be ok 😂😂
