Released in 1957, “Oh, Boy!” became one of Buddy Holly and the Crickets’ signature recordings and a key example of the clean, driving sound coming out of Lubbock, Texas during the first great wave of American rock and roll. Written by Buddy Holly, Norman Petty, and Sonny West, the song was built around Holly’s distinctive vocal delivery, simple guitar work, and the tight rhythm section that helped make the Crickets so influential. “Oh, Boy!” reached the Top 10 on the U.S. pop chart and became an important part of the early rock music canon, sitting at the intersection of rockabilly, country, and rhythm and blues. For Richie and the High Street Rockers, it is a natural fit within the band’s focus on 1950s and early 1960s American rock and roll, vintage oldies, and the live sound that made this music so exciting in the first place.
