if you’re spending additional time detangling most of your clients then you should incorporate it into price & time for all services. if it’s a rarity or an extreme case, then you can charge a fee but there should be a customer-facing guideline for what meets the threshold.

Exactly how you say , i dont take any detangling fee for now , but some people i would say most of our people when they know they have an appointment , they will not touch their hair, and let you do the work which im glad to do, the thing is if i have to detangle for an hour , is a service by itself

I think the real question is what counts as “extra” detangling 👀 because surely some level of detangling should already be expected when working with type 4 hair?

No it shouldn’t be a fee, I wash my hair before my appointment spend time de tangling and blow drying and by the time I’ve sat in the chair it needs it again

As a multi texture stylist I totally agree with the fee for excessive detangling. Don’t get me wrong, there should be an expected level of detangling. I myself have only ever charged extra for detangling once in my career for and it was actual person with 2c/3a hair not 4C. My salon rate/pricing is approximately £50 per hour if it takes if I have 4 clients in a day where I have to spend 30+ mins for each of them purely for detangling, that’s time lost and is then costing me £25 per head, that’s £100 lost in a day. Stylists should not have to swallow the cost of a person not maintaining doing the bare minimum to look after their hair.

Coming from the perspective of being behind the chair and a natural hair girly unfortunately a lot of clients will come with matted hair or hair that hasn’t been detangled at all ( when they do their own wash), so if I’m just running through what you’ve already done I don’t charge. However if I can clearly see that the hair has been washed without any detangling being done and the middle is still wet/Blowdry needed then I’d charge because it’ll definitely be more than 10mins.

In the salon that I go to they don’t have detangling fees. Is simply “wash & style” or “wash style , cut” but there “added time fee” if your hair is very dense and may require a longer time to do. if I were to do braids the hairstylist will just automatically detangle my hair with no added fee just pay the price of the style. “Detangling fees” is just a rip off and a way for these “hairstylist” to make more money than they should. Any style you are going to do will need a level of detangle one way or another. Even if you done it prior to the schedule appointment, hair will have tangled by the time you arrive to the salon. Even with looser textures they still need to detangle hair

Nah, after experiencing rough detangling from myself and then learning how to actually care for my hair— I wouldn’t trust anyone else to detangle my hair. Even if they are licensed.

I think it’s a slippery slope 😬. Especially if they decide after the fact….. I’ve been in a position where someone has said I have to pay more becuse they couldn’t detangle or handle my hair (while in the wash bowl). Meanwhile they just couldn’t do hair…… Keep in mind I had parted my hair before the appointment because it wasn’t the first time.

Such a good conversation! I’m a natural hairdresser but I’m also a black woman with said natural hair so I lead my business with my experiences in mind. I’ve just allocated a set amount of time in my service time frame for detangling and it’s always nice for clients to have it done ‘complimentary’ a small note on the site regarding matting ( huge difference) is usually also sorted by a polite mention in person that if matting becomes the core of the appointment they have the choice of forfeiting the original service for a de-matting or to reschedule. Communication solves several of these issues in my experience

I didn’t even know a detangling fee existed? Depending on the service the client has requested I think. Some services would naturally require a detangling session.
