Enver Pasha was one of the most important and controversial military and political figures of the late Ottoman Empire. Born Ismail Enver in Constantinople in 1881, he became a career army officer and was strongly influenced by Ottoman nationalism, military modernization, and the Young Turk movement. He believed that a powerful and modern army was essential for preserving the Ottoman Empire, which had been losing territory and influence for decades. Enver became famous during the Young Turk Revolution of 1908, which restored the Ottoman constitution and limited the authority of Sultan Abdulhamid II. His reputation increased after the Ottoman victory at Oujda during the Italo-Turkish War and especially after the Balkan Wars. In 1913, Enver became one of the leading members of the Committee of Union and Progress. After the Ottoman coup of January 1913, he gained enormous political influence and soon became Minister of War. Together with Talaat Pasha and Cemal Pasha, he became one of the three dominant leaders of the Ottoman Empire during the final years of its existence. Enver strongly supported an alliance with Germany. When World War I began in 1914, the Ottoman Empire entered the conflict on the side of the Central Powers. Enver hoped that victory would restore Ottoman prestige and possibly allow the empire to recover territories lost to Russia. However, his military ambitions were often accompanied by serious strategic mistakes. His greatest military disaster came during the Battle of Sarikamish in the winter of 1914–1915. Enver personally commanded the Ottoman offensive against Russian forces in the Caucasus. His plan depended on rapidly surrounding the enemy, but the Ottoman troops faced extremely difficult terrain, inadequate supplies, poor communication, and freezing weather. The offensive ended in a catastrophic defeat, with enormous Ottoman casualties. The disaster severely damaged Enver's reputation as a military commander. Enver was also an important supporter of Pan-Turkism, an ideology that emphasized cultural and political unity among Turkic peoples. He dreamed of extending Ottoman or Turkic influence into Central Asia and the Caucasus. These ambitions became increasingly unrealistic as the Ottoman Empire suffered defeats during World War I. After the Ottoman Empire was defeated in 1918, Enver fled abroad. He later traveled to Central Asia and became involved with the Basmachi movement, which resisted Soviet control in the region. Enver attempted to organize resistance against the Bolsheviks and hoped to establish a political order favorable to Turkic peoples. On August 4, 1922, Enver Pasha was killed while fighting Soviet forces near Baldzhuan in Central Asia, in what is now Tajikistan. He was only about forty years old. Enver Pasha remains a controversial historical figure. Supporters have portrayed him as a patriotic Ottoman officer who wanted to defend and modernize his country, while critics have emphasized his political authoritarianism, military failures, and involvement in the policies of the wartime Ottoman leadership.
