Four days. And the Pentagon’s response is apparently: trust us with another $1.5 trillion. No. Absolutely not. This is what “the most powerful military in the world” looks like when accountability is optional and defense contractors are treated like permanent members of the Cabinet. We can always find obscene amounts of money for Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, Boeing, and the rest of the military-industrial complex. But when it comes to basic readiness—safe equipment, functioning generators, decent food, clean drinking water, and humane conditions for enlisted sailors—suddenly the system breaks down. The people at the top will never be the ones sweating inside a powerless steel box, trying to sleep in suffocating heat, wondering whether the water is safe, or eating whatever food can be salvaged. Defense executives will still be comfortable. Their shareholders will still be comfortable. The contractors will still get paid. Where did the maintenance money go? Why did critical systems fail? What warnings were missed? Who is responsible? And why should corporations that profit from military spending get richer while service-members are left enduring conditions no one in Washington would tolerate for an afternoon?
